What we learned shipping 140 brands

Overview

Notes from a decade of launches: what still surprises us and what we stopped doing.

After more than a decade of launching brands, a few lessons keep coming back. Most of them are not about design tools or trends. They are about people, decisions and how a small studio can do its best work. Here are the ones we return to most often.

Small teams ship better work

Our best projects had the fewest people in the room. One decision maker on the client side, one designer who owns the idea on ours and a short, honest feedback loop. Every extra voice adds opinions, and opinions are not the same as direction.

We now ask every new client to name a single person who can make the final call. It is the most valuable question in our onboarding.

Strategy is worth more than it looks

Early in our studio’s life, strategy felt like a slow warm-up before the real work. Today we know it is the real work. A clear idea saves weeks of design debate later, and it is the part of a project clients keep using long after launch.

Launch is the beginning, not the end

A brand that looks great on launch day can fall apart six months later if the team cannot use it. We now design toolkits, templates and training as carefully as the identity itself. A brand that the in-house team understands will outlive any agency relationship.

What we stopped doing

  • Free pitches. They reward guessing over understanding, and the best work comes from proper discovery.

  • Ten logo options. Two strong routes create a better conversation than ten weak ones.

  • Guidelines nobody opens. We now build living toolkits in Framer and Figma instead of long PDFs.

  • Saying yes to every brief. A focused studio does better work than a busy one.

What still surprises us

We are still surprised by how much small details matter. The note inside a box, the wording of an error message, the half second a page takes to fade in. Customers rarely mention these things directly, but they feel them. Those small moments are often what makes a brand feel genuinely cared for.

And we are still surprised, every time, by how good it feels when a client’s team starts using the brand confidently on their own. That is the moment we know the work is done.
